Iain Matthews & Searing Quartet ‘Joy Mining’ (2009)

‘Alhoewel Iain Matthews een paar jaar geleden officieel met pensioen ging, kruipt het bloed waar het niet gaan kan. Hij riep ‘Common Grounds’ in het leven, een project waar hij singer-songwriters van allerlei pluimage de kans bood om zich voor een groot publiek te profileren. Egbert Derix, en Searing Quartet, die hij kende van de live uitvoering van zijn legendarische solo album ‘If you saw thro my eyes’ , werd bij de zaak betrokken en dat was het begin van een vruchtbaar muzikaal samenwerkingsverband. Op papier lijkt het misschien een vreemde combinatie: een internationaal gelauwerde jazzpianist/componist, en een singer-songwriter die Engelse folkrock en Amerikaanse westcoastpop samensmolt, maar in de praktijk blijkt het een gouden combinatie. Matthews is verantwoordelijk voor de als immer intrigerende teksten, Derix voor de composities, terwijl drummer S joerd Rutten, bassist Norbert Leurs, en saxofonist Peter Hermesdorf met zijn prachtig ingehouden spel, het transparante geluidsdecor vervolmaken. Daarbij komt Matthews’ fluwelen voordracht uitstekend tot zijn recht. Hij voelt zich binnen zijn nieuwe biotoop hoorbaar als een vis in het water. Sterker nog: het klinkt alsof hij in zijn meer dan veertig jaar omspannende carrière bewust naar dit punt heeft toegeleefd.’

‘Iain Matthews is in de herfst van zijn leven een samenwerkingsverband aangegaan met de Nederlandse jazzpianist Egbert Derix en het resultaat is wonderschoon.
De mede-oprichter van de legendarische folkrockband Fairport Convention en de man die met Matthews Southern Comfort een grote hit had met Joni Mitchell’s ‘Woodstock’, noemt Joy Mining ‘zonder twijfel en discussie’ het beste album uit zijn lange carrière.
Het is bekend dat alle muzikanten dat zeggen van hun laatste geesteskind, maar Matthews zou in dit geval best eens gelijk kunnen hebben. Wat meteen opvalt wanneer je de plaat opzet is dat Matthews als zanger onontkoombaar is: je móet wel naar hem luisteren.
Daarnaast vertelt hij mooie, veelal nostalgische verhalen in zijn beeldende
teksten. Joy Mining doet denken aan het werk van Kurt Elling en dat is een groot compliment.

De muziek van pianist Egbert Derix is fantasievol en dienstbaar. Joy Mining is een laat meesterwerk van een popmuzikant die zichzelf, voor de zoveelste keer, opnieuw heeft uitgevonden.’

‘Iain Matthews has an impressing musical history. the Englishman stood on the base of the famous Fairport Convention, the founders of folkrock. Later he started his own Southern Comfort and later Plainsong. He went to the US, developed as a singer-songwriter and lives and works in our country nowadays. He really surprises with his his collaboration with the Searing Quartet from Maastricht. He calls it his best album ever.
Matthews’ beautiful voice (his best trade), the pianocompositions of Egbert Derix and the saxsolo’s of Peter Hermesdorf form a very special synthesis on this album.
Joy Mining strays of the well known road and therefore it’s absolutely worthwhile to listen to.’

‘The British singer-songwriter Iain Matthews (1946) was in 1967 one of the founders of the folkrock band Fairport Convention and later formed his own group Matthews Southern Comfort. After 28 years in the US he settled in The Netherlands in 2002. On the cd Joy Mining he works together with the Searing Quartet, that was formed at the Maastricht Conservatory, and has won numerous awards. The quartet is formed by saxplayer Peter Hermesdorf, pianist Egbert Derix, basplayer Norbert Leurs, and drummer Sjoerd Rutten.
All songs have been written by Iain Matthews and Egbert Derix.

‘”A few years ago we were very enthousiastic about the duo album of Ton Engels and pianist Egbert Derix ‘In het Zuiden Opklaringen”. It seems that that album
also caught the ear of Iain Matthews because for his new album “Joy Mining” he wrote all the songs together with Egbert Derix and played them with his jazzcombo The
Searing Quartet, with Derix on piano, Peter Hermesdorf on sax, Norbert Leurs on bass, and Sjoerd Rutten on drums. The beautifully produced album by Leon Bartels is described by Matthews himself in the cd booklet as the best album in his career.
This first few times we played the album we had our doubts because the jazzy songs were so completely different of what we were used to hear from Matthews. But when we listened to them more we were captured completely because ‘Joy Mining’ has an extreme high quality on every level: instrumentation, songs, singing. So we really had to agree with Matthews. Matthews made a lot of albums in his career with more simple and accessible songs but he has never made music on such a high and mature level as on “Joy Mining”.
I am very aware that by saying this I can make the impression that “Joy Mimng” is kind of an arty album but that’s not true. Indeed there are no ‘easy hits’ on this album but all the songs have a subtle and easy flow that you can also find in the jazzier work of Steely Dan, be it that Matthews’ work has more of an singer-songwriter twist to it than a poppy one. The times of ‘Woodstock’ may be far and gone but with this beautifull written, sung, and played ‘Joy Mining’ Iain Matthews rises so high above everything and reaches such a high level on which only the greatest can operate.”
